How to make a wooden jewellery box by your own hands?

 

Let's make a small wooden jewellery box. It is possible to put in it small collectible items, for example coins or marks, small souvenirs. As initial raw materials we take plywood in the thickness of 8 mm. We will be convinced that it equal enough, without peelings and it is desirable without traces of removal of knots and other defects. Such plywood possesses uniform drawing of a structure; sheet it will be easy to be cut, the probability to break off interline interval slices sharply decreases at work. So, we will start.

We put the scheme of the future casket on plywood sheet. For this purpose is better to use drawing adaptations and a pencil. At scaling of the ready drawing it is necessary to transfer all corners and lines precisely. An arrangement of elements not casually: so (for rectangular sheet) practically there will be no unnecessary scraps.

We take in hands a fret saw and we start to cut the basic components — two covers and eight elements-walls. The we will cut more exactly, the details more precisely will turn out and the it is necessary to work as files less. Special attention at the given stage we will give to study sawing on border of two future details: in case of an error we or will spoil at once two details, or receive superfluous double work at an adjustment stage.

Now time for the most jewellery and responsible work has come: thorn's joiner's connections. As we do a small jewellery box, we use simple small square thorns. Their height should be equal to a thickness of plywood (8 mm). To cut usually begin pick’s saw. However for our case quite will approach also a hacksaw on metal or a fret saw. The hacksaw edge on metal practically doesn't bend, well cuts a tree.

At performance of straight lines nothes we do the amendment on divorce of a cloth of a saw or a hacksaw.

Insistently I advise not to hurry up: durability of the future jewellery boxes directly depends on quality of work at the given stage. Besides the error price has increased: it is necessary to cut out replacement of the spoiled preparation from the very beginning.

We cut out a bottom and a box cover. In comparison with cutting out of thorns this work looks as the present rest. Yes, it is indeed slightly easier, however to relax for the present early. Constantly we watch a sawn through line and we observe a right angle between a file and a plywood surface — at connection of walls with a bottom and a cover there should not be cracks.

So, we have consulted, perhaps, with the most difficult stage of our work.

Now we make elements of our hand-made box in a single whole. Not all thorns enter into nests? It doesn't matter. The main thing — that they didn't fail in grooves, and it is easy to correct all other discrepancies by means of a file. For this purpose it is convenient to use a file with square section. We are not fond and more often we put details to each other.

For more exact adjustment I recommend to do it on an equal surface, for example on a table. For reliability of a wall of a box we fasten glue. It is extremely desirable to press at least on a short time interval connected parts to each other, for this purpose we use a clamp or a vice (between a metal surface and a product it is inserted a wooden lining). After a box fastening it is adjusted and pasted to it a bottom as we connect a cover and its thin box.

After separate components — a casket and a cover — are made, they should be connected by means of eyelets. Can get in household shop two-three small loops of a small thickness or long furniture loops.

That a loop didn't stand out from the jewellery box, slightly we will choose for it wood. For this purpose we use a fret saw or a saw in a combination to a direct joiner's chisel of the necessary width. We fasten loops small screws of diameter corresponding to apertures. As well as for considered before hand-made articles to fasten a screw in strictly planned place and not to split plywood (especially — close to edges), I recommend to drill an aperture with a diameter a bit less (on 1–2 mm) diameter of a screw.

For a fastening of parts of a casket, except eyelets, it is possible to use every possible mechanisms from outer side: hooks, locks, and etc. It will help to relieve latches saved things inside our jewellery box from undesirable encroachments, and also won't allow it to reveal at the most inappropriate moment. We attach them, as well as loops, small screws through preliminary drilled apertures. If a jewellery box made from wood, it is possible to insert the small furniture lock.

Decoration of the jewellery box

Generally our jewellery box is ready. For certain in own way it is beautiful but it is a time to put some decoation of the jewellery box.  However not always the ideal hand-made article with which it is possible to varnish or decorate with drawing simply from the first turns out. For a jewellery box which we are going to coat, after usual surface for wood I recommend to apply a plaster first coat (it a first coat гессо).

As a material we use not new sheet of plywood, and old furniture veneer or other suitable subject, which lateral walls are made of plywood (or boards) and consequently are cut already out and fastened by one of joiner's connections.

We line the same angular connection, we cut out elements (it is not forgotten about width of a cutting part of a saw or a fret saw, do on it the amendment) and we fasten elements on the other hand. For cutting out of walls from such preparation is better to use a fret saw. Such small cunning will allow to reduce essentially an operating time of making a wooden jewellery box.

Perhaps, it is all operations which are necessary for creation of a jewellery box from plywood. At use of a thin wooden board the sequence and a way of performance of operations doesn't change.

Betty Boop
